OpiGo

OpiGo

OpiGo is a stock market community app for Indian retail investors. Members post predictions on individual stocks, and instead of the call disappearing into a feed, the app keeps score: every prediction is tracked against the market until it closes, and each member carries a public accuracy figure, an average return and an OpiGo Score. That scoring is what makes the community useful, because it turns "someone on the internet likes this stock" into a track record you can check before you follow anyone. Around that sit polls, leaderboards, market data, news, an IPO tracker, learning modules and a marketplace of goal-based recommendations from SEBI-registered research analysts.

What We Built

A React Native Android app over a Rails and PostgreSQL backend: a prediction feed scored against live market data, leaderboards, polls, IPO and news tracking, SEBI-registered expert advisory subscriptions, and a rewards wallet.

Why This Was Hard

Scoring is the whole product, and scoring is the hard part. A prediction is not a post - it is an open position with a target, a direction and a horizon, and it has to be settled against real market data at the right moment without anyone touching it. That means price data has to arrive reliably for every symbol a member can name, predictions have to close on schedule whether or not the app is open, and the resulting score has to be one a member cannot argue with. A leaderboard that disagrees with the market, even once, is a leaderboard nobody trusts again.

The second constraint is that this is a regulated space. India's market regulator draws a firm line between a community opinion and investment advice from a registered research analyst, and the product carries both. What a member posts, what an unregistered contributor must disclaim, and what a SEBI-registered expert sells as a recommendation are three different things that live next to each other in the same feed and must never blur. That distinction had to be visible in the interface, not buried in terms of service.

The third is that a consumer app tied to market hours has no quiet period to grow into. Load arrives with the opening bell, in the same fifteen minutes, every trading day, and a growing user base makes that peak sharper rather than smoother. Growing from a few hundred users to over ten thousand meant the infrastructure had to absorb a traffic shape that concentrates rather than averages out.

What We Delivered

  • The Android app in React Native: the prediction feed, member profiles with public accuracy and score, polls, leaderboards ranked weekly, monthly and all-time, and the follow graph underneath them.
  • Market surfaces alongside the community - index tickers, per-stock pages, curated news, and an IPO tracker covering upcoming, active, closed and listed issues.
  • The paid side of the product: subscription plans for recommendations from SEBI-registered research analysts, banded by target range, time frame and risk-reward, plus the rewards wallet members earn against.
  • Learning modules structured by difficulty, with per-topic progress, so a new investor has somewhere to start other than the feed.
  • Support on the web app alongside the Rails and PostgreSQL backend it shares with mobile.
  • Infrastructure and release work through the growth to 10,000+ users, on a load profile that peaks with market open.
